SEAHOLLY ERYNGIUM GLITTER WHITE

Sea holly is a bespoke flower adding interest to flower bouquets.

  • First year flowering perennial cut flower, suitable for drying
  • Long lasting spiny flowers add texture and drama to arrangements
  • Thrives in hot dry growing conditions, blooming all summer
  • Life Cycle: Perennial

Use: Cut flower, focal flower, textural accent, fresh and dried arrangements

    Height: 70–90 cm

    Spacing: 30–45 cm between plants

Transplant to finish: 20–24 weeks from transplant (flowers reliably from the second year, though some plants may bloom lightly in the first season)

Transplant carefully, avoiding root disturbance as plants develop a deep taproot and dislike being moved once established.

Pinching: Not recommended. Plants naturally produce multiple flowering stems, and pinching may delay flowering.

Staking: Usually not required. Strong, upright stems rarely need support, although staking may be beneficial in very windy sites.

Frost: Hardy once established. Tolerates moderate to heavy frosts and overwinters well in temperate climates. Protect young seedlings from severe frost.

Photoperiod: Facultative long-day—flowers more freely under long summer days.

Exposure: Full sun (6–8+ hours daily)

    🌾 Soil & Fertility

Soil: Well-drained, light, sandy or gravelly soil

    pH range: 6.5–7.5

Fertilizer: Apply a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages soft growth and reduces flower quality.

    💧 Watering

    Keep evenly moist during establishment.

Once established, sea holly is highly drought tolerant and performs best with deep, infrequent watering.

Avoid poorly drained or waterlogged soils.

    ✂️ Harvesting & Post-Harvest

Harvest stage: Harvest when the flower heads are fully coloured and the surrounding bracts have completely opened.

Stem length: 50–80 cm ideal for bouquets.

    Post-harvest:

  • Remove lower foliage.

  • Place immediately into clean water with floral preservative.

  • Vase life is typically 10–14 days.

  • Excellent for drying—harvest before the flowers begin to fade and hang upside down in a dark, dry, well-ventilated area.
