Using Flower Plugs for Blooming Success

Updated: Nov 9

Starting a garden or enhancing an existing one can be a rewarding experience. One of the most effective ways to ensure vibrant and healthy blooms is by using flower plugs. These small, young plants offer a head start in the growing process, making it easier to achieve a flourishing garden. This article will guide you through the benefits, planting tips, and care techniques to maximize your garden’s potential with flower plugs.

The Benefits of Using Flower Plugs

Flower plugs are young plants grown in small cells or trays, ready to be transplanted into your garden. They provide several advantages over seeds or mature plants:

  • Faster Growth: Since plugs are already established seedlings, they are at a more advanced stage and eager to grow

  • Higher Success Rate: Seeds can be hit and miss and a set back when they are unsuccessful. Plugs are professionally grown and ready to thrive

  • Extended Blooming Season: Starting with plugs can lead to earlier and longer flowering periods.

  • Cost-Effective: They are often less expensive than mature plants but offer similar benefits. We aim to supply you with many plants to grow many blooms, no point in putting a couple of flowers in a vase, you want to grow a bouquet

  • Time-Effective: This is the biggest winner, seeds take time, presicion, patience and greenhouse space. Seedling plugs are ready to go.

Using flower plugs can be especially helpful for gardeners who want to save time and effort while still achieving a beautiful garden.

How to Plant Flower Plugs for Best Results

Planting flower plugs correctly is essential to ensure they thrive. Follow these steps for successful planting:

  1. Choose the Right Location

Select a spot with appropriate sunlight and soil conditions for the specific flowers you are planting. Most flowering plants prefer well-drained soil and full to partial sun.

  2. Prepare the Soil

Loosen the soil to a depth of about 6-8 inches. Remove weeds, rocks, and debris. Mix in organic matter like compost to improve soil fertility and drainage. A well composted garden will provide a great start.

  3. Water the Plugs Before Planting

Ensure the plugs are well-watered but not soggy. This helps reduce transplant shock.

  4. Dig Holes for the Plugs

Make holes slightly larger than the plug’s root ball. Space the holes according to the mature size of the plants to avoid overcrowding.

  5. Plant the Plugs

Gently remove the plugs from their trays, squeezing the plastic pot from underneath helps loosen the plant, pushing them out from the bottom helps keep the root ball intact. Dont pull them from the top, or you may pull the plant out without its roots intact! Place each plug into a hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Firm the soil around the plug to eliminate air pockets. Check individual plant planting instructions as some prefer deep planting others like Lisianthus prefer high planting.

  6. Water Immediately

After planting, water the plugs thoroughly to help settle the soil and provide moisture for root establishment. A seaweed tonic is helpful at this stage to settle them in and encourage root growth.

  7. Mulch Around the Plants

Apply a thin layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Sugar cane or pea mulch is a bit finer and easier to manage around the small seedlings.

By following these steps, you give your flower plugs the best chance to grow into healthy, blooming plants.

Essential Care Tips for Thriving Flower Plugs

Once your flower plugs are in the ground, proper care is crucial to ensure they develop into strong, flowering plants. Here are some practical care tips:

  • Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water early in the morning or late in the afternoon to reduce evaporation. While they are young, overhead watering in the first few weeks is preferred. Once established drip irrigation can be used to keep water off foliage

  • Fertilizing

Use a balanced, slow-release organic fertilizer to provide essential nutrients. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid over-fertilizing. I prefer an organic fertiliser that encourages soil health. These babies should be thriving and you should be noticing continual growth if soil conditions are right.

  • Weeding

Regularly remove weeds that compete for nutrients and water.

  • Pest and Disease Control

Monitor plants for signs of pests or diseases. Use organic treatments as needed, following safety guidelines. Healthy plants can fend off some pests and disease orgaincally.

  • Deadheading

Remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.

  • Support

For taller plants, provide stakes or supports to prevent damage from wind or heavy blooms.

Consistent care will help your flower plugs flourish and produce vibrant blooms throughout the growing season.
